Under The Influence - 2000/2001

A professional development project for Moving East

Welcome

"Under the Influence" was an innovative series of professional development events led by internationally renowned dance artists such as Eva Karzac, Scott Clark, Fin Walker, Colin Poole, Sasha Roubicek, and Moving East's own director Paul Douglas. These accomplished practitioners offered an insight into the sources which have had a profound influence upon their artistic development.

For the first time, Moving East hosted an artist-in-residence scheme giving our two invited dance artists, Fin Walker and Colin Poole, the opportunity to undertake research and development in a pressure-free environment. During their time at Moving East, Fin and Colin also had the chance to work with some of our associated therapists to explore complementary techniques to enhance their creative processes.

As part of "Under the Influence", we will also held four courses for dance artists focussing on skills enhancement and creative development. These intensives promoted an interdisciplinary approach to training and a holistic understanding of the balance and quality of energy utilised in different techniques.

Participants worked in a supportive and educative environment with some of the most highly regarded, multi-skilled practitioners in Dance, Aikido, T'ai Chi, Feldenkrais and other related disciplines. This was a great opportunity to develop personal skills for performers, choreographers or teachers.

Moving East gratefully acknowledges financial support from London Arts for this programme.

Artists Residency

The Artists Residency is a new scheme for established artists who are interested in informing and resourcing their creative processes through an understanding of Martial Arts and/or Complementary Medicine.

Fin Walker and Colin each participated in a residency to undertake research and development, exploring complementary techniques with one of Moving East's associated therapists. Both Fin and Colin shared their interdisciplinary experiences during two weekend workshops in January and June 2001 respectively.

Fin Walker: 11 - 22 December 2000 and 8 - 12 January 2001

Fin Walker is an independent dance maker, performer and teacher, and has worked with many dance artists and companies in England including Jonathan Burrows and Rosemary Butcher. She began creating work in 1993 and later established her company, Walker Dance in 1998. Last year Fin won the major Jerwood Award for Choreography.

During her residency at Moving East, Fin researched three projects including a new solo 'Now', a site generic project for summer 2001 'Setting the Sun', and the second installment of 'The Three of Us' - a trio for three men (the first part of which was created with The Jerwood Award). Fin used her therapy sessions to work with Peter Dunleavy (Osteopath) during her residency.

Colin Poole: 2 - 20 July 2001

Colin Poole has been a member of many of England's well known dance companies including Phoenix and Rambert, and has been making his own work for over 4 years. Colin's choreographic resources include an understanding and experience of a broad range of dance styles and his in-depth study of Yoga and Aikido, in which he holds a black belt. Colin is currently studying Aikido with Paul Douglas at Tetsushinkan.

Colin used his residency to undertake a period of research and development exploring original choreographic material for a new dance production which toured from Autumn 2001. During his residency, Colin worked with associated therapists Scott Clark (Feldenkrais), Linda McQuillan (Shiatsu) and Jessica Loeb (Chavutti Thirumal massage and Kriya breathing).
