The North London Area of the British Judo Council
Technical kata Course

Sunday 17th April 2005, 10:00 – 16:00

As part of an ongoing commitment to Judo excellence the North London Area of the BJC is pleased to announce a one day technical kata course that will be run by Simon Mazzullo 6th dan BJC, who has been appointed to develop and promote kata within the BJC.

The integration of kata as an essential part of judo and an important training method alongside randori and uchikomi was promoted by Jigoro Kano Shihan, the founder of kodokan judo. He insisted that all dan grades have a good knowledge of kata as well as contest prowess for elevation in grade.

In recognition of the relevance of kata to the development of the Judo student, the British Judo Council has always required at least some knowledge and a demonstration of the ‘randori-no-kata’ from 3rd kyu onwards. It is the policy of the BJC to encourage the study of all kata both for the important technical content and as part of our appreciation of judo.

This course is recommended for adult judo students and mature juniors. All are welcome regardless of association affiliation, provided they have current valid insurance cover included with their respective membership. Your licence will be required. BJC members can have their licences endorsed for attendance at this official BJC Area event.

Numbers will be limited and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, payment being required to reserve your place. There may be unreserved places available on the day but this cannot be guaranteed.

Fee: £15.00

Judo Course: 22 Feb - 28 Mar 2004

As I had such fun running the Judo Basics course, I am running another 6 week judo course starting Sunday 22nd February and running through to last session on Sunday 28th March.

Times are arrival at 15:45 for 16:00 sharp start and ending at 17:30.

The objective of the course is to help prepare adult students for the next or, for beginners, their first grade examination. Numbers will be kept low for adequate student/instructor interaction.

Although this is a British Judo Council syllabus course, aikidoka and other nihon budoka (Japanese martial arts students) are welcome and should find it interesting and enjoyable .

Course fee, which includes a keikogi (practice suit), annual membership of kyushinkai together with a BJC licence, course notes and session fees is £100.00. If you already have a keikogi and current membership of either tetsushinkan or kyushinkai the session fees are £50.00 for the course.

Please contact me for further details about this and/or future courses.

Kaeshi-no-kata Course

As part of an ongoing commitment to Judo excellence the North London Area of the BJC held a one day kaeshi-no-kata course on Sunday 26th May 2002 that was run by Simon Mazzullo 5th dan BJC, who has been appointed to develop and promote kata within the BJC.

The ‘Forms of Counters’ is the third randori-no-kata that, together with the nage and katame-no-kata, has a direct and valuable contribution to make to the improvement of contest skills. In recognition of the relevance of this kata to the development of the Judo student, this is now offered as an alternative to ju-no-kata within the dan grade syllabus of the British Judo Council.

This course was recommended for all Judo students of 3rd kyu (Green Belt) and above including Juniors and was also suitable for lower grades who are keen to improve their contest Judo.

Level 2 BJC Coaching Award

As part of their continuing programme for promoting and developing Judo excellence, the NLABJC offered a weekend FPJ2 course run by Mr Hosaka, Kodokan 7th Dan, on Saturday 14th July and Sunday 15th July 2001 at the Tetsushinkan Budojo.

The BJC coaching awards promote the teaching of basic Judo principles to children and adults. The level 2 BJC coaching award course (FPJ2) extends the scope of the Level 1 BJC coaching award (FPJ1) from the teaching of beginners to coaching of students at the early stages of competition and possibly beyond. The attainment of the FPJ2 is also a mandatory requirement within the BJC for assessment to non contest Dan grade and for contest grades of 5th Dan. People who sign for BJC grade assessments and all NVQ assessors within the BJC should also be qualified to FPJ2

All candidates who wish to be assessed for the award are required to hold:

1. An up to date BJC licence (this must be produced at the course)
2. FPJ1 award
3. The Judo grade of 1st kyu or above

Aspects covered included:

1. Safety and good practice
2. Syllabus of selected Judo techniques
3. Coaching theory
4. Basic anatomy & physiology

The cost of this course was £35.00 per candidate (reduced fee of £25.00 for re-validation candidates) and was subsidised by the NLABJC Each candidate required the latest version of the Level 2 Coaching Award booklet and this will be available at the course for £2.50 per copy.

Nage nō Kata - Course

Most high grade Japanese judoka emphasise the importance of kata for the development of the Judo student and many consider the study of the randori nō kata (nage, katame and kaeshi) to be an essential part of training for the highest level of contest success.

Kata should be considered part of training for physical, mental and contest proficiency just as are randori and uchikomi. Unfortunately, the opportunity to learn and benefit from the practice of kata has become quite rare, with kata not being part of the normal activity of most Judo clubs and the availability of people with the required knowledge and teaching skills is also limited.

As part of their programme for developing Judo excellence, the NLBABJC held a one day kata course on Sunday March 4th 2001 at the Tetsushinkan Budojo in Stoke Newington (address and map). The cost was £15.00 for the day and the course was run by Simon Mazzullo, 5th dan BJC.

Based on nage nō kata, some of the aspects covered included:

  1. The BJC syllabus grading requirements for kata

  2. Kata as a learning aid for Judo basics

  3. The relevance of kata for contest training

  4. How to teach kata

This was a nage nō kata course but facets of other kata were explored.
