From January 2008, Jutjitsu classes have been cancelled until further
notice...
What is JuJitsu?
The idea of Jujitsu is to use self defence techniques which utilise the
opponents strength and weight against them, without using brute force. Hence it
is very suitable for women.
Originally, Jujitsu was an art of combat used by the samurai warriors of
Japan, including both armed and unarmed techniques. Later on, other forms of
Martial Arts have evolved from Jujitsu such as Aikido and Judo.
Today Jujitsu puts an emphasis on throws, strikes to vital points, joint
dislocations and self defence. Most Jujitsu schools have developed the
competitive aspect of the art and it can be considered as a sport with four main
components: sparring, random attacks, katas and kobudo (weapons techniques
including katana, (the samurai sword), nunchaku, and many more).
Imperial Women's Jujitsu Club is about learning self defence
techniques and gaining confidence, skill, poise and balance.
Each session will focus on fitness in order to build up strength and
flexibility, as well as on learning effective techniques. During each session,
you will follow a syllabus to help you develop your skills, with the potential
to progress to black belt level. There will also be an emphasis on punches,
kicks, locks, ground fighting and random attacks. All abilities are welcome.
Sensei Marie-Paule is a second Dan Black Belt, a British Jujitsu
Association qualified coach with full first aid certification. Her teaching is
suited to all sizes and abilities as she demonstrates that good technique and
timing can overcome raw strength and aggression. She is also a gold medal winner
in sparring at the National BJJA Competition in 2003.
Classes are held every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, £8 per class.
