Tetsushinkan Gradings
Typically during an grading at Tetsushinkan the attack will
be specified (for example katate dori or one handed grab) and it is up to you to
do appropriate techniques depending on the direction and force of the attack.
This goes for all kyu grades.
The attacks specified and the level of understanding
desired will of course vary depending on the level of the person being graded.
Appropriate techniques for katate dori include (but are not limited to):
- shiho
nage (from gyaku hanmi stance)
- ikkyo
(from ai hanmi or gyaku hanmi stance)
- irimi
nage
- kokyu nage
- sumi
otoshi
Typical attacks are listed on the aikido
techniques page.
The number of techniques demonstrated is usually less important than the
effectiveness of the specific techniques shown, although higher grades will be
expected to demonstrate some more techniques than lower grades.
Things to watch out for during the examination at all
levels include:
- posture
- focus
(zanshin) before during and after techniques
- relaxation
(especially of shoulders)
- spirit
- kiai
- clarity
and effectiveness of technique
- lack of hesitation
Gradings are typically held twice a year (around May and November), and
deciding when to grade should be done in discussion with Paul.
